The breath of compassion

my heart is confused
to feel your hot and cold breath
O turbulent wind!

a finite life

knowing it will end
I learn to appreciate
each glorious breath

upon foreign shores
my desperate words arrive to
share a final breath

with a gentle breath
the wind peacefully herds clouds
across the prairie

with twilight’s cool breath
arrives such beauty that my
heart now weeps with joy

the past speaks to us
even when tightly embraced
in winter’s cold grip
